"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience," (Col 3:12)

14 August 2023

13 August - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Once, when I was little, my parents used to say that when there is a storm, it means that God is angry because of our bad deeds, our sins. Of course, now I know they said that to scare me so I wouldn't be the naughty I was. When I look at the liturgy of the word today, I see that I have nothing to fear in my relationship with God because it is the most delicate and beautiful relationship in which God cares for me with extraordinary love and gentleness. God does not want to scare me, but to encourage me to come to Him, to come to Him constantly, to entrust my heart to Him every day, which He takes gently in His hands and transforms with His love.

God is very calm and gentle in His dealings with us. We have an image of this even in today's Gospel where Jesus, entering the boat, calms the wind. Such information may seem insignificant, because why do we need to know that the wind has calmed down? But when we look at our spiritual life, it is very important information regarding God's work in our lives. The winds that come to us bring anxiety to our hearts. Jesus wants to silence what disturbs us, remove what threatens us, what causes us fear, sadness and discouragement. God has no desire to scare us. Sin is what makes us fearful, what irritates our heart, making us unsure of our faith, making us spiritually unstable. God wants to spare us these difficult feelings, he wants to protect us from all this, giving us peace, giving us joy, certainty that he will not hurt us, will not deceive us, that in relationship with him we will experience the good and love that we need so much.

Therefore, let us not be afraid of God, let us not be afraid to come to Him because, as the scripture says, He cares for us, He cares that our lives go on well and peacefully, that is why even in suffering and hardship, we are sure that we can always count on Him.
