On December 10, 1925, seven years after the end of the apparitions in Fatima, Mary and Child appeared to Sister Lucia showed her a heart surrounded by thorns and addressed the words:
“Look, my daughter, at my Heart, surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”
During the apparition, Sister Lucia asked why five such Saturdays. In response, she heard that there are five kinds of offenses and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They are:
-
Blasphemies against the Immaculate Conception
-
Blasphemies against her virginity
-
Blasphemies against her divine maternity, at the same time the refusal to accept her as the Mother of all men
-
Instilling indifference, scorn and even hatred towards this Immaculate Mother in the hearts of children
-
Direct insults against Her sacred images
The essence of the service on the first five Saturdays of the month is to make reparation for sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
A short Fatima invocation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, have mercy on us.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, intercede for us.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, help us.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, save us.
Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, protect us.
